“None of us are getting any younger”. How often have we heard that expression? Yet many of us are residing in houses that were designed for larger families and are now either too big for our needs and/or are in need of upgrading or refurbishment/repairs. Family homes that were suitable while children were at home are now no longer suitable, are too large and are expensive to heat and maintain.
Thurles Lions Trust are commencing a process which will, in the first instance, determine the demand for a housing scheme of one- and two-bedroom homes in Thurles that would be designed for the “older” one- and two-person household. If there appears to be sufficient demand the next step will be to examine how such a development could be delivered.
At this stage there are no plans in place or even site identified. We are simply gauging the interest and the potential demand. If it appears that there is sufficient demand, then we will facilitate a consultation process that will examine all options that are potentially available to deliver such a housing development.
There are many benefits to be had from a “downsizing” initiative and providing a comfortable “A-rated” energy efficient home in a secure environment for those of older years is just one. Should the initiative progress then it should see the release of family homes that will be available for purchase by younger families and/or for the private rented market. This will not only assist in meeting some of the serious housing shortage that exists, but it should also see these houses upgraded and refurbished to render them more energy efficient.
